MetaMask is a free and open-source Ethereum wallet that works with a wide range of different tokens built on the Ethereum platform (such as those following the ERC-20 standard, or non-fungible tokens). In addition, the built-in Coinbase and ShapeShift APIs allow you to receive them from others or purchase/swap them.
MetaMask is unique in that it can communicate with websites. If you were using a different wallet, you'd have to copy and paste payment addresses or scan a QR code on a separate device to make a transaction. The website just pings your wallet using the MetaMask extension, and you are given the option to accept or reject the transaction.
In addition to being a standard crypto wallet, MetaMask is well-suited for use with smart contracts and other decentralized software. Setup is next on the agenda.
Installing the MetaMask wallet on the Brave Browser is simple. However, we're not going to get into too much detail about it because it's also accessible for iOS and Android. We'll be using Firefox for this guide, but your procedures will be almost identical regardless of the platform you're using.
Visit the metamask.io to get the latest version. To access the Chrome Web Store or the Firefox Add-ons site, simply choose your browser from the drop-down menu. When you're finished, click the button to make the extension a permanent part of your system. Before it can begin working, you may have to grant it access to certain areas of your computer. Take a look at how much access it has to your browser and if you are satisfied, we are ready to move forward.
You should now see a welcome message.
When you get to the next page, the program anticipates that you may have been lazy with the previous step, because it asks you to confirm the phrase. If you didn’t the first time, click Back and write it down!Confirm the phrase, then proceed to the next step. Hit All Done, and you’ll see the wallet interface.
The MetaMask Android/iPhone app is a convenient way to access Web3 apps while on the road. In addition to providing the same features as the add-on, this browser also incorporates a decentralized application (dApp) browser.
The application's workflow resembles that of the browser extension quite closely. You can interact with Uniswap in the way we saw above, or you can send ether or tokens directly from your wallet.
We didn't get to all of MetaMask's cool features today. A hardware wallet (Trezor and Ledger are both supported) can also be connected, as well as the creation of a contact list and the ability to both receive and send payments. The extension's options allow you to tailor it to your own needs.
As far as security is concerned, all of the standard rules apply. An internet-connected device must be used to run MetaMask, which is a "hot" wallet. In contrast to a cold wallet, which is kept offline to minimize attack surfaces, this puts you at greater danger of being attacked. To sum up, if you're going to use MetaMask, you should be aware of the websites you provide access to.
There's no better way to explore the decentralized web than MetaMask. After reading this guide, you should have seen the wallet's potential. As of this writing, it has more than a million registered users.
It's inevitable that programs like MetaMask will play an important role in bridging the gap between current technology and the Ethereum network.
Once you’re done pestering the fox on the welcome page, click on Get Started. This is where you’ll be prompted to either import a or create a new one. Click on Create a Wallet. The next page asks whether you want to submit anonymized data to help the devs improve the app. Pick whichever option you prefer. Now we need to create a password. If you’re one of those legendary creatures that actually reads the user agreement for your software, you can view it by clicking on Terms of Use. Otherwise, come up with a strong password, tick the box, and hit Create.
The following point is enough to warrant its own subheading. MetaMask is a non-custodial service, meaning that no one else can access your funds – not even the MetaMask developers. Your tokens exist in a sort of encrypted vault within your browser, protected by your password. That means that if your computer is lost, stolen, or destroyed, nobody can help you recover the wallet. Your will be forever lost in the void of cyberspace. So, it’s crucial that you write down your . This is the only way you can restore your account should something unfortunate happen. As suggested, we recommend that you write the words down and store them in two or three different locations. You don’t need to bury them in a fireproof safe deep in the forest, but hey, it can’t hurt.
